Google launched its Expedition App on the Playstore in the International Society for Technology in Education 2016 conference. This is a big push towards Google’s strategy of providing classroom relevant apps and services.

The Expeditions app allows teachers to take their students on virtual field trips to locations across the world. Through virtual reality, teachers will be able to lead students and show them the points of interest in a specific location. The students will be able to follow the teacher at once or in small groups, exploring the place.

The scenes available on the expeditions app include historical buildings, temples, a national park, a mosque, underwater coral reefs, the Moon and even the planet Mars. In India, the Taj Mahal and Akshardham Temple is available to explore.

A separate category called ‘Career Expeditions’ lets a classroom follow professionals in various fields doing their work. One can even go inside the human body, through computer generated imagery.

Google’s VR Cardboard can be used to experience the scenes in virtual reality and also on smart phones and tablets.
